The coyote pup was terrified and clearly in pain when Russell spotted him, a trap clamped on his left front leg. He must have limped back to Tohono Chul after a foray with his pack into the neighboring areas.
For days, Russell, one of our staff, tried to capture him so the pup could be treated. Finally, on a Sunday, with persistence and patience, Russell coaxed him out of his hiding place and arranged to get him to Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center (SWWCS) where we knew he would receive expert care.
The pup was not well, and the initial diagnosis was that he might lose his leg…
We’re not in the business of animal rescue, not officially. But, Tohono Chul does partner with organizations that are like-minded, dedicated to caring for wildlife, living in harmony with our unique habitat, and supporting the health and well-being of our community.

The coyote pup is still recovering. However, the good news is that he won’t lose his leg. And if all goes well, he’ll be united with a new coyote pack and will return to the wild.
